Moscow - St Petersburg

This is an illustrated account of a holiday cruising the rivers, canals and lakes on a route from Moscow to St Petersburg. The cruise on the MS Lomonosov was operated by Viking River Cruises and our tour was booked with, and managed by, Saga Holidays.

In addition to discovering the surprising beauty of the two Russian cities, the cruise took us into the heart of Karelia in northern Russia where we

reached a point only a couple of hundred kilometres south of the Arctic Circle. Our boat took us through ornate locks and across some of the largest lakes in Europe.

We travelled a distance of more than 1300km on six rivers and canals, five lakes and reservoirs, traversing 18 locks. Some of our journey was at night, but there was still plenty of scope to experience Russia from the water. Follow our personal guide to see what we experienced.
